Clear water between jagged cliffs,
with a subtropical forest trail alongside it

There's apparently more than one waterfall in Seogwipo called Wonang Falls. Separate from the Wonang Falls in Donnaeko Valley that I introduced before, there's said to be another waterfall by the same name in Andeok Valley, located around Gamsan-ri, Andeok-myeon. Same name, but a completely different location and scenery, so if that's ever confused you, today's story should help sort it out for good. Andeok Valley is known for clear stream water running between jagged rock cliffs, with a walking trail reportedly set through dense subtropical forest. A valley with a very different character from Donnaeko — let's take a slow look at Andeok Valley today.

Clear Water Running Between Jagged Cliffs

The Andeok-myeon area of Seogwipo is known for having valleys, oreum, and coastline all relatively close together, and Andeok Valley in particular is often mentioned as the place where you can experience that classic valley scenery most vividly. Sitting just off the main road, it's said to offer a comparatively calm atmosphere for enjoying the valley, rather than the crowds you'd find at more famous tourist spots.

The first thing that comes to mind at the mention of Andeok Valley is its jagged rock cliffs. Rock walls that look shaped and worn by the water over a long stretch of time are said to run along both sides of the valley, and the clear stream flowing through the narrow channel between those cliffs is said to be the valley's signature scene. Being a volcanic island, Jeju's rock formations here are said to look especially striking, and the shadows and reflected light created by the angular, rugged cliff faces are said to add a mysterious mood to the whole valley.

Deep inside this valley sits a waterfall called Wonang Falls, according to what's passed down. As mentioned earlier, though, this Wonang Falls is said to be an entirely separate waterfall from the one in Donnaeko Valley, Seogwipo. Since they share the same name, some people apparently mix the two up — but Andeok Valley's Wonang Falls sits among the jagged cliffs around Gamsan-ri, while Donnaeko's Wonang Falls sits deep within Donnaeko Valley on Hallasan's southern slopes, so it's worth remembering that their locations alone are entirely different. I'd be careful to confidently share the falls' exact scale or water volume, so I'd recommend double-checking those details before you visit.

A Trail Through Dense Subtropical Forest

Walking through Andeok Valley, what catches your eye almost as much as the stream is the dense subtropical forest. Evergreen, warm-climate trees are said to fill the area around the valley densely, and a walking trail is reportedly set through this forest, often introduced as a route where you can walk alongside the stream. Thanks to the shade cast by the large trees, the inside of the forest is said to feel noticeably cooler than outside even in midsummer, and accounts often mention a walk where sunlight filtering through the leaves blends with the sound of the stream.

The term 'subtropical forest' might sound unfamiliar, but simply put, it refers to a forest made up mostly of evergreen trees that grow in warmer regions. Thanks to its geography as an island, Jeju is said to have preserved forests like this well in various spots, and Andeok Valley is said to be counted among the places where you can find one of the best examples. Being able to see this kind of exotic yet dense forest scenery up close, distinct from mountains on the mainland, is said to be part of what makes the Andeok Valley trail appealing.

Watching the stream flow between jagged cliffs and thick forest, you realize just how different two places within the same Jeju can look.

A Different Kind of Water From Donnaeko's Wonang Falls

Because both Andeok Valley and Donnaeko Valley carry a waterfall named Wonang Falls, the two are apparently mixed up fairly often when people plan a trip. But the impressions the two valleys leave are said to be quite different — while Donnaeko's Wonang Falls is described as an emerald pool waiting at the end of a deep gorge, Andeok Valley is introduced more as a grander scene where jagged cliffs and dense subtropical forest come together. It's less about which one is better, and more that it's interesting in itself how differently each valley can look, even within the same Seogwipo.

It also makes you wonder why both places share the word 'Wonang' in their names, but I haven't been able to find material I'd feel confident explaining that with, so I'll leave that part as a guess for another day. What does seem clear is that both waterfalls are often mentioned as representative of the kind of water-color stories Jeju's valleys hold. If you're planning to visit Andeok Valley, just remember to head toward Gamsan-ri in Andeok-myeon rather than Donnaeko, and you shouldn't run into any confusion.

Many visitors to Andeok Valley are said to spend more time enjoying the walking trail itself than the stream alone. Walking alongside the water, the cool air rising from the valley overlaps with the shade cast by the forest, so long stretches of the walk are said to stay comfortable even in summer. Even without making it all the way to the falls, many accounts say the walk alone is satisfying enough on its own.

The area around Gamsan-ri in Andeok-myeon is also known for its quiet village scenery beyond the valley itself. After taking in the valley, wandering briefly toward the village is said to be another way to see a different side of Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo.

GYULI's Tip · Andeok Valley is a natural, unmodified stretch of rock and water, so the rocks are said to be slippery — be sure to wear comfortable, grippy shoes. The forest trail has plenty of shade, but valley water is said to rise suddenly after rain, so check the weather beforehand, and make sure you've confirmed your destination as Gamsan-ri, Andeok-myeon so you don't end up mixing it up with Donnaeko's Wonang Falls. When searching on your navigation app, double-check that you've typed 'Andeok Valley' and not 'Donnaeko' by mistake.

That's the story of Andeok Valley's Wonang Falls in Gamsan-ri, Andeok-myeon — a different one from Donnaeko's — for today. Same name, completely different face, so next time you're in Seogwipo, it might be fun to compare the two.
