Where a motel once stood,
paintings and sculptures now fill the rooms

Do you remember when GYULI told you about Dumoak, the Kim Young-gap Gallery, last time? That was a story about a whole life held inside a space — an abandoned school building reborn as a gallery through one photographer's own hands. Today's story has a different flavor. Right in the middle of Jeju City's old downtown stands a worn-down building said to have once operated as a motel, now said to have been reborn as a contemporary art museum while its exterior was left largely untouched — this is Arario Museum Dongmun Motel II. This time, instead of one person's life, I want to tell you the story of how a single old building is being given new use.

The Museum That Didn't Even Take Down the Sign

As the name suggests, this museum is said to have been created by renovating a building that once operated as a lodging house called 'Dongmun Motel.' Rather than clearing the site and putting up a brand-new building the way most museums do, the biggest feature of this space is often said to be how little the original structure and exterior of the old motel were changed, with only the interior reworked into exhibition space. The worn stairs, narrow corridors, and the layout of what used to be individual rooms are all said to remain intact rather than torn out, so visitors often say they feel as though they're walking through an old motel building itself. Each small room is also said to have become its own little exhibition space.

It's also often said that the old signage and traces on the exterior walls were deliberately left in place rather than erased. Instead of a clean, polished renovation, the building is said to have been left showing its age, so that visitors can still sense what this place used to be. That approach is often described as exactly what sets this space apart from other museums — proof, as it's often introduced, that a building doesn't need to be new and dazzling to hold a story worth telling. Some visitors say their first reaction is to wonder whether this really is a museum at all, given how worn it looks — and that very strangeness is said to be part of what makes it so memorable.

The outside looks like a run-down motel, but once you step inside it's a museum — that felt strange the first time I found out. But thinking about it more, a place like this might stick in your memory even longer.

How Jeju's Old Downtown Is Filling Up With Old Buildings, Newly Used

Dongmun Motel II is said to be located in Jeju City's old downtown, near Sanjicheon stream and Dongmun Market. This neighborhood is said to have once bustled as Jeju's city center before quieter years set in as time passed. I often hear that as more and more old buildings in this area are revived as museums or exhibition spaces instead of being torn down, the old downtown itself has gradually taken on a different look. Dongmun Motel II is often mentioned as part of that same trend, and nearby there's said to be another exhibition space created by renovating an old theater building, with the two often introduced together as a walking course. I find it interesting how visitors are said to wander old alleys and come across museums one after another along the way.

Reviving old buildings instead of demolishing and rebuilding them is often described as one way for a city to find new uses without completely erasing its old face. Walking through Dongmun Motel II is often said to feel less like visiting a museum and more like looking into an entire old alley at once — and I found it deeply striking to hear that, as much as viewing the art itself, the experience here is also about seeing the passage of time carried by the building. It's also said that as more spaces like this appear, the way travelers walk through the old downtown is gradually changing too.

Another Way to Travel Jeju, Without Tearing Anything Down

When planning a Jeju trip, hearing the word 'museum' tends to bring a sleek, brand-new building to mind — but Dongmun Motel II, I think, is a place to encounter art in a rather different way. Watching the traces of the old building sit alongside the artworks placed within it makes me feel that what this space wants to say isn't held only in each individual piece, but in the building itself. I'd rather not state definitively here exactly when it opened as a museum, but it's consistently said, through many accounts, to have held its place in the old downtown's landscape for a number of years now.

If Dumoak, introduced last time, was a space that held one person's whole life and gaze, then Dongmun Motel II, introduced today, feels different in nature — a space that holds the story of a single building enduring time and being given new use. If you find yourself walking through Jeju's old downtown, GYULI recommends pausing in front of this building that used to be a motel and is now a museum, and taking a slow look at its exterior. You may find that the story here begins even before you step inside.

Dumoak was a story about a person, but this time GYULI wanted to tell you a story where the building itself is the main character. It's said the motel sign was never even taken down before it became a museum — worth a look next time you're walking through the old downtown.
