An urban waterfall said to be
just steps from downtown Seogwipo

Hi, I'm GYULI, the tangerine sprite who's lived on Jeju's oreum for a hundred years. Today I want to introduce a waterfall said to sit very close to downtown Seogwipo — Cheonjiyeon Falls. It's said to be located in Seohong-dong, Seogwipo, and I still find it surprising that a waterfall can be this close to the middle of a city. For someone like me who's spent a hundred years up on the oreum with the wind, a waterfall pouring down always feels a little unfamiliar and yet welcome at the same time. Even the name itself isn't ordinary. Today I want to slowly walk you through the story behind Cheonjiyeon Falls. If you're worn out from the heat, take this cool story along with you.

An Urban Waterfall Said to Be Close to Downtown Seogwipo

Cheonjiyeon Falls is said to be located in Seohong-dong, Seogwipo City. What surprised me when I first heard the name was that, unlike other waterfalls that require a long hike up a mountain trail, this one is reportedly close enough to reach on foot from downtown Seogwipo. For someone who's only ever lived on the oreum, it still feels remarkable that a space with water flowing so naturally exists right in the middle of a city. Hearing that you can turn off a downtown street and catch the sound of the falls made Seogwipo feel like a different kind of town to me. It's said to be a familiar, nearby spot not just for tourists but for the people who live in Seogwipo, too.

The meaning behind the name is also quite striking. Cheonjiyeon is said to mean 'the pool where sky and earth meet,' and when I first heard that, I found myself turning the phrase over in my mind for a while. The idea that water falling from the sky lands on the earth and forms a pool — captured whole in a single name — struck me as beautiful. A waterfall is, in a sense, always a place where a stream falling from above meets water gathering below, but seeing that idea distilled into a name makes me feel the sensibility of the people who named it long ago. To me, a place with this much story packed into just its name is reason enough to visit.

Just the name alone — a pool formed where sky met earth — was enough to make me curious about this waterfall.

Said to Be Lit Up at Night — Exact Hours Need Checking

Another reason Cheonjiyeon Falls feels special is that you can reportedly visit it at night, too. It's said to run night lighting, creating a mood quite different from how the falls look in daylight. Hearing that made me start imagining what the waterfall must look like after dark. That said, I can't confidently tell you the exact hours the lighting runs or whether the schedule changes by season. Operating details like this can change over time, so I want to be clear that checking again before your visit is necessary. I don't want to hand out a guessed time and send you there for nothing.

So in this piece, I'm not going to state an exact time I'm not sure of. What I do want to clearly point out is this: the falls are said to be lit up at night, and the exact operating hours need to be confirmed before you go. You could enjoy the cool sound of water and the green forest during the day, and if the timing works out, catch a different face of the falls at night. Personally, I find it fascinating that the same place can wear such different expressions between day and night.

Why Cheonjiyeon Falls Is Worth Remembering in Summer

This waterfall's story naturally comes to mind for me every summer. When you're worn out from walking downtown under a blazing sun, having somewhere with cool, flowing water within walking distance feels like a genuinely welcome option. The area around the falls is said to be surrounded by dense forest, and just walking under that green shade is said to bring some relief from the heat. Since I spend my time up on the oreum taking the full brunt of the sun, I admit I'm a little envious of a shaded space where forest and water come together like this. If you're visiting Seogwipo, it's said to be a manageable distance to stop by between stretches of sightseeing downtown, so I'd recommend fitting it into your summer plans.

Once again, though, I want to remind you that everything I've shared here is simply organized from what's said and reported. Details that can change often, like night lighting hours or seasonal variations, are worth double-checking before your visit. What I can say with confidence is this: the falls are in Seohong-dong, Seogwipo City, they're said to be an urban waterfall close to downtown, and the name is said to mean 'the pool where sky and earth meet.' Remember just these three things, and you'll still come away understanding why Cheonjiyeon Falls' name comes up so often as a symbol of Seogwipo.
