Green barley rippling in the wind,
a flat island best seen by bike

Today GYULI would like to talk about Gapado, a small island reached by ferry from Unjin Port in Moslpo, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo. Located around Gapa-ro in Daejeong-eup, this island is said to sit close enough to the Jeju mainland to reach in just around ten minutes by boat. The whole island is said to be known for its low, nearly flat terrain, which is reportedly why it's often introduced as a destination best explored by bicycle. It's said to be especially well known for the green barley fields that color the island between April and May, and the Gapado Cheongbori (Green Barley) Festival is reportedly held to match that season. Today GYULI is laying out what's known about Gapado, being upfront about what isn't confirmed.

A Short Ferry From Unjin Port, Just Minutes Away

The way onto Gapado is reportedly a ferry from Unjin Port in Moslpo. Given how close the island is, the crossing itself is said to be short, but exactly how many minutes it takes and how many sailings run per day can apparently shift with the season and that day's sea conditions, so it's hard to state precisely here. There's also talk that sailings can be cancelled outright on days with strong wind or high waves, so if you're planning a trip to Gapado, the safest approach is to check that day's sailing status and timetable before heading out. Ferry reservations are reportedly said to fill up early during peak season, so it's worth building in extra time to secure tickets.

A Flat Island, Best Enjoyed by Bicycle

One thing said to set Gapado apart from Jeju's other outlying islands is its terrain, which reportedly comes up often. The whole island is said to stay flat with no real climbs, which is reportedly why more travelers choose to explore it slowly by bicycle rather than on foot. Bikes are said to be available for rent near the pier, though rental methods and rates can apparently vary by season, so it's worth checking on-site. Riding around the island, many accounts describe narrow paths cutting through green barley fields, with spots that offer sweeping views out toward Sanbangsan and even Hallasan in the distance. More than any flashy attraction, several accounts describe Gapado as a place to enjoy the wind, the barley fields, and the sea coming together in one scene.

I heard that on Gapado, you barely need to pedal before the green barley fields seem to stretch out endlessly — the way the barley bends and ripples in the wind is said to be especially striking.

Worth a Visit Even Outside Barley Season

April and May, when the barley turns green, is said to be Gapado's signature season, but other visitors reportedly come at different times of year just for the island's quiet mood. The fields are said to change color and appearance with the seasons after harvest, and small cafes or eateries on the island are often introduced as a place to rest along the way. That said, restaurants and facilities may not be plentiful given the size of the island, so some reviews suggest bringing what you need from Moslpo beforehand.

The single most important thing on a Gapado trip is reportedly not missing the boat back. Since the island is small and sailings aren't as frequent as on the mainland, missing the last ferry could leave you stuck, so it's worth checking the return schedule before you head in. Sailings can reportedly be cancelled depending on the weather, so double-checking the day's ferry status before you go is said to be the safer approach.
