A name born from thorny trees,
said to be a low, easy oreum to climb

Today GYULI would like to introduce Gasi Oreum, located in Dongil-ri, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo. Just hearing the name, you might picture something sharp and rugged, but it's actually said to have a rather charming backstory behind its name, and it's known as an oreum that isn't too difficult to climb. It's even said to offer views overlooking nearby Moseulpo Oreum and the Daejeong-eup area, so today let's take a slow look at what kind of place Gasi Oreum is.

Where Does the Name 'Gasi Oreum' Come From?

The name Gasi Oreum is said to come from the fact that gasinamu — more precisely, mulchamnamu, a type of oak — have long grown all over the oreum since old times. At the summit, there's said to be a horseshoe-shaped crater that opens toward the southwest, and this crater is said to give a sense of the oreum's overall shape.

Knowing where the name comes from makes the oreum feel different once you're climbing it. Looking out for the gasinamu trees along the way makes the walk even more fun.

Not Too High, Easy to Climb, With a Well-Kept Trail

The southeast side of the oreum is said to be fairly steep, while the northwest side is generally gentle, and overall it's known as an oreum that isn't very high, making it easy to reach the summit. The trail is also said to be well-maintained, so it's an easy walk without much strain, and there's said to be a farm road running up close to the summit. Amid the thickets and dense forest, trees like yedeoknamu (mallotus) and boriseunamu (silverberry) are said to grow, and some slopes are said to have farmland cultivated partway up the hillside — so the scenery along the way is worth taking in too.

GYULI's Tip · If you search 'Gasi Oreum' on your navigation, you're said to be able to park along the roadside near a cattle barn on the southwest side. If you search the different address 'Daejeong-dong Dongil-ri' instead, it's said to guide you to a parking lot on the opposite side — so pick whichever search term is more convenient for you. The address is around 1 Hamoisamro 21beon-gil, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and it's said to be always open, year-round.

Hearing about the thorny trees behind the name reminded GYULI that every oreum has its own story behind it. If you're in Daejeong-eup, climb Gasi Oreum and take in the view over Moseulpo Oreum and the Daejeong-eup area.
