A lone sea stack off Seogwipo said to carry the orally-transmitted legend of a general turned to stone

Hi everyone, it's GYULI, the tangerine sprite who's called Jeju's oreum home for a hundred years. Today I want to talk about Oedolgae, on the coast of Seohong-dong in Seogwipo. It's a name that comes up often on Jeju travel itineraries, so plenty of people have heard it, but far fewer seem to know why it's called that or what stories it carries. I used to think of it as just a rock jutting out of the sea, but it turns out there are several stories tangled together around it. Let me carefully go through what I've heard today. A lot of what's told about this place has been passed down by word of mouth for a long time, though, so please take everything here as 'said to be' rather than settled fact.

Alone in the middle of the sea

Oedolgae is known as a distinctive rock formation off the coast of Seohong-dong in Seogwipo. As the name suggests — 'oedolgae' roughly meaning a rock standing apart — it's said to have gotten its name from standing alone out in the sea, cut off from the mainland. Exactly when it started being called this isn't something I can state with confidence. That said, the sight of it standing apart from the other rocks nearby is reportedly striking enough that most people nod along once they see it in person.

As for how Oedolgae came to be, it's said to have taken its current shape the way many of Jeju's other coastal formations did — through long years of erosion by waves and wind. The explanation that's often given is that the harder rock remained while the surrounding material gradually wore away, eventually leaving behind a solitary pillar standing in the sea. It's hard to say the exact timing or fine details of that process have been definitively confirmed, though, so this part is probably best understood as 'commonly said' rather than settled fact.

The legend of the 'General Rock,' kept alive through oral tradition

No conversation about Oedolgae seems complete without mentioning its nickname, 'General Rock,' and the legend attached to it. The story goes that a general from long ago was somehow connected to this rock, though exactly which general and what happened is said to vary a bit depending on who's telling it. So I'd rather not pin down a specific person or event as 'the fact.' What does seem clear is that this legend was never really written down and settled — it's a story that's been carried from mouth to mouth over a long time, which is to say, it survives as oral tradition rather than documented history.

Beyond the General Rock legend, Oedolgae is also said to be woven into older folktales from the days of the Tamna kingdom. Stories about a lonely grandmother turned to stone, or someone who waited for a loved one who'd gone out to sea and turned to rock in the waiting, are also said to circulate around the site. I can't really say for certain which version came first or which parts were added later. These are stories that may well have picked up new details and shifted shape across generations, so it probably makes more sense to treat them as oral tradition carrying the affection people have long held for this rock, rather than as historical fact.

Even without knowing its exact origin, the fact that people have kept telling and retelling stories about this rock for so long seems to be what makes Oedolgae special.

Said to meet Seogwipo Olle Trail Course 7

Oedolgae also comes up often among people who enjoy walking trips. It's said to be one of the points where the Seogwipo Olle Trail Course 7 connects, and following the coastal walkway around Oedolgae is reported to lead naturally into the Olle trail route. With the sea on one side the whole way, it's said to be a pleasant walk with the sound of waves close by. That said, trail details and section times can apparently shift a bit depending on the season, so if you're planning to actually walk it, it's worth checking the latest trail information before you go.

Looking back over everything, it strikes me how many stories have layered up around what looks, at first, like just one rock. Even without a confirmed origin, the General Rock legend, the old Tamna folktales, and today's coastal walkway connecting to the Olle trail all seem to keep adding to Oedolgae's story. If your Jeju trip takes you through Seogwipo, it might be worth pausing in front of Oedolgae for a moment and letting those old stories cross your mind.

GYULI's Tip · Oedolgae is said to be where the coastal walkway meets Olle Trail Course 7, so if you're planning a walk, it's worth checking the trail guide and weather beforehand.
