A tiny coastal pool said to resemble
Hallasan's Baekrokdam in miniature

Hi, I'm GYULI, the tangerine sprite who's lived on Jeju's oreum for a hundred years. Today I want to introduce a very small pond said to sit along the coast of Seogwipo. It's called Socheonji, and if this is your first time hearing the name, you might be wondering what it even is. As it's told, this pond is a naturally formed pool carved into the rocky shore right next to the sea, and it's said to have earned its name — meaning roughly 'small Cheonji' — because its shape and coloring are said to resemble a miniature version of Baekrokdam, the crater lake at the summit of Hallasan. Baekrokdam is somewhere I've only ever looked up at from my oreum, so hearing that a small echo of it could be found right by the sea struck me as a little surprising. Today I want to slowly walk through the story behind Socheonji, along with a few things worth knowing before you visit.

Bomok-dong, Seogwipo — A Small Pool Said to Resemble Baekrokdam

Socheonji is said to be located along the coast of Bomok-dong, Seogwipo City. More specifically, right in the middle of a flat rocky shore area, there's a rounded pool that looks almost as if someone carved it out on purpose — and when water collects in it, the shape and color are said to resemble a scaled-down version of Baekrokdam at Hallasan's summit, which is apparently why it came to be called Socheonji, or 'small Cheonji.' Some people who've actually visited Baekrokdam are said to compare the two side by side and say they really do look alike. I haven't made it up to Baekrokdam's summit myself yet, but even from photos, the pool's round rim and the color of the water pooled inside do seem to share something in common.

What's interesting is that this pool isn't something people carved by hand — it's said to be a shape the coastal terrain formed naturally over a long stretch of time. Jeju's coastline is said to have all kinds of rock pools scattered here and there, large and small, and Socheonji seems to be one that became especially well known thanks to the story of its resemblance to Baekrokdam. Since it sits right where land meets sea, water is said to rise up around the pool at high tide, while at low tide the pool is said to sit there neatly on its own — so even though it's the same spot, the scenery you find can look quite different depending on when you show up.

Said to Be Even More Famous for the Scenery Reflected in Its Water

The reason Socheonji comes up in conversation as often as it does is said to have less to do with the pool's shape itself and more to do with the scenery reflected in the water that collects inside it. On days when the wind is calm and there's no ripple on the surface, the pool's water is said to act almost like a mirror, capturing the sky, the surrounding rocks, and even tree shadows exactly as they are. Quite a few photography enthusiasts are said to seek this place out specifically to capture that reflected scene on the still water. Hearing that made me realize, all over again, how surprising it is that a small rock pool like this — not even a proper lake — could end up so beloved.

Who knew there'd be another little sky sitting right next to the sea — on a calm day, they say looking into it feels like a different world entirely.

That said, this reflected scenery isn't something you're guaranteed to see no matter when you go. Even a little wind is said to ripple the surface and break up the reflection, and on days with strong waves, the pool itself is said to churn with seawater, making that mirror-like look hard to come by. So Socheonji is probably less of a 'show up and you're guaranteed a pretty photo' kind of place, and more of a spot where the weather and the tide need to line up before you can really see what makes it special.

Why It's Worth Checking the Weather and Tide Before You Go

Because Socheonji sits right next to the sea, conditions around the pool are said to shift depending on the tide. At high tide, waves are said to push in close to the pool, which can mean getting your clothes wet or the pool itself mixing with seawater, while at low tide the pool is said to sit relatively calm and stable, making it a better time to catch the reflection. If a windless day happens to line up with that too, you could call yourself lucky. So if you're planning to see Socheonji, I'd recommend checking the weather and tide information before you head out. I want to be careful about stating something as definite as 'go at this exact time and you're guaranteed to see it,' though — since conditions are said to change day by day, it's worth keeping in mind that you might visit and not catch the reflection you were hoping for.

Personally, I actually like places that change their face depending on the weather like this. It would certainly be convenient if a spot looked the same every time, but getting to meet a rock pool churned up by waves on one day and a mirror-like pool holding the whole sky on another seems to make this place feel even more special. Even without making it up to Baekrokdam itself, I think there's a charm in getting to see a scene that echoes it, right here by the sea.

GYULI's Tip · Since Socheonji sits on a rocky coastal area, it's worth checking the tide schedule and weather before you head out. The rocks can be slippery when wet, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, and keep in mind that the reflection is said to be visible only on calm, windless days. On days with high waves, it's said to be safer not to get too close to the pool.

That's about as much of the Socheonji story as I've got for today. Time it right with calm weather and the right tide, and I think you'll meet a little sky that looks a lot like Baekrokdam.
