Not Seongeup Folk Village — Here's What Jeju Folk Village in Pyoseon Is Actually About

A Story from Pyoseon-myeon's Jeju Folk Village
Jeju Folk Village

Search for places in Jeju with 'folk village' in the name, and there's one mix-up that's easy to fall into. Seongeup Folk Village, where real residents are said to live, is a separate place in Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo — and Jeju Folk Village, which I want to introduce today, is said to be a completely different place. Located at Minsokhaean-ro 631-34 in Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo, Jeju Folk Village sits near Pyoseon Beach and is said to be a display-style village recreating scenes of old Jeju life. Rather than a village where people actually live today, it's said to be a space built specifically so visitors can look around traditional houses and everyday tools — a different character from Seongeup Folk Village, and worth clarifying right at the start before we dive in.

Known as a Recreated Village Displaying Scenes of Old Jeju Life

Jeju Folk Village isn't a surviving, inhabited village — it's said to be a space built to recreate how people once lived in old Jeju. Traditional houses, said to have been built differently depending on region or social class, are said to be gathered together here so visitors can compare various forms of old Jeju homes in one place. Exactly how many houses are recreated, or which era and region each one represents, isn't something I'd want to lay out in detail here — I'd rather leave that as something fun to compare as you walk through yourself. Some houses are also said to let you step inside and see the interior layout, offering a closer look at how old Jeju households once lived.

Since it isn't an inhabited village, there's said to be less need to walk quietly out of consideration for residents' daily lives, unlike at Seongeup Folk Village. Instead, being a space built for display, it's often introduced as offering a closer, more varied look at old Jeju life. Both places let you experience Jeju's traditions, but given their different character, it may be worth choosing based on what you're hoping to get out of your visit.

I thought it was a village where people actually lived, but once I realized it was built to show old ways of life up close, I actually felt more free to look around every corner.

Said to Let You Look Around Traditional Houses and Everyday Tools

Step into Jeju Folk Village and you'll find rows of traditional thatched-roof houses lined up, or so it's said. Inside and around the houses, everyday tools that old Jeju residents are said to have actually used are also said to be on display, letting visitors get a direct look at the various tools once used for farming, fishing, and household life — a highlight visitors often mention. Seeing scenes of old Jeju life up close, beyond just photos or writing, is said to naturally lead many to imagine what a day in that era might have looked like. Small signs are also said to be placed next to many of the tools, so reading through what each one was used for adds another layer to the visit.

Each house is said to be decorated a little differently, which is said to make comparing them one by one part of the fun. Some houses are said to be recreated in a form suggesting a larger household, while others reflect a more modest way of life, and these differences are said to hint at how varied living standards and lifestyles once were among old Jeju residents. It's also often introduced as a good learning space to visit with children.

Introduced as a Good Family Stop Near Pyoseon Beach

Jeju Folk Village is said to sit close to Pyoseon Beach, making it easy to fit into an itinerary alongside a beach visit, or so it's often introduced. With several houses and exhibit spaces spread across a fairly large site, walking through it all at an easy pace is said to take a while, so many recommend visiting with a full day set aside. Given the size of the site, shaded spots and rest areas are also said to be placed here and there, making it easy to pause for a break along the way.

If Seongeup Folk Village is a place to quietly walk through a real, living community, Jeju Folk Village could be described as having a different character — a place to more actively look around and experience recreated scenes of old life. Visiting each one with its distinct character in mind, without mixing them up, should give you a fuller picture of Jeju's traditions.

GYULI's Tip · Jeju Folk Village is said to sit on a fairly large site, so comfortable shoes and plenty of time are recommended. Since it's close to Pyoseon Beach, planning it together with a beach visit as a full-day route could work well too.

Keeping in mind that this is a different kind of place from Seongeup Folk Village, despite the similar name, should help you visit Jeju Folk Village with clearer expectations. If you'd like to see and walk through scenes of old Jeju life for yourself, why not carefully add Pyoseon-myeon's Jeju Folk Village to your itinerary?

Today I, GYULI, the hundred-year-old tangerine sprite, told you about Jeju Folk Village in Pyoseon-myeon. Don't mix it up with Seongeup Folk Village — come enjoy searching through the old houses instead. Next time, I'll quietly tell you which thatched house caught my eye the most, and you can tell me yours too.
