The Story of a Bridge
Saeyeon Bridge, linking Seogwipo Port and Saeseom

Walk toward the sea from downtown Seogwipo and, past the harbor, you might spot a bridge whose lights sparkle prettily. By day it looks like a plain white bridge, but once the sun goes down it's said to transform completely, and people seeing it for the first time apparently stop in their tracks to take a photo. This bridge is called 'Saeyeon Bridge.' It's said to connect Seogwipo Port with Saeseom, a small uninhabited island floating just offshore, and today I wanted to slowly walk through the story of Saeyeon Bridge and Saeseom. I've heard plenty about its famous night view, but I imagine a lot of people are curious about how this bridge came to be and what kind of place Saeseom actually is.

Saeyeon Bridge is said to resemble a 'teu,' apparently

Saeyeon Bridge crosses the sea between Seogwipo Port and Saeseom. Cars can't drive on it — it's said to be a pedestrian-only bridge that people can only cross on foot. Because of that, while you're crossing there's no traffic noise at all, just the sea breeze and the sound of waves, and that quiet is said to be one of the pleasures of walking across Saeyeon Bridge. Standing on the bridge, boats moored at Seogwipo Port come into view on one side, while Saeseom's low forest appears on the other, so the scenery keeps shifting even during this short crossing.

Look closely at the name Saeyeon Bridge and there's an interesting story attached to it. The bridge's curve is said to have been designed to resemble the shape of a 'teu,' a traditional Jeju boat. A teu is said to be a boat Jeju people long used for fishing or moving goods along the coast, close in form to a raft made of logs tied together. It's said to have had a plain, unadorned shape, simply logs joined together — and the smoothly flowing curve of Saeyeon Bridge along with its row of cables is said to have been meant to evoke that same feeling of a teu. Thinking about it that way, even a single bridge seems to quietly carry the life of Jeju's sea within it, and knowing that changes how the bridge looks once you see it again.

BY THE NUMBERSUninhabited IslandSaeseom, the island Saeyeon Bridge connects to, is said to be a small island where no one lives. Before the bridge was built, it's said people could only reach it by boat.

A bridge that transforms completely at night, Seogwipo's signature night view

Saeyeon Bridge is said to have become especially famous once night falls. Once the sun fully sets and it gets dark, lights are said to come on across the entire bridge, gradually shifting color as time passes. A bridge that looks plain by day is said to turn into a gorgeous line of light floating over the sea in front of Seogwipo once night comes, and that contrast seems to be why it's so often introduced as one of Seogwipo's signature night-view spots. In fact, if you search for Seogwipo travel stories or photos, you'll apparently find an unusually large number of Saeyeon Bridge photos taken at night.

Saeyeon Bridge by day and Saeyeon Bridge by night are said to feel like two different bridges. Only after seeing both faces can you really say you've seen the real Saeyeon Bridge.

The view of Seogwipo's night sea from the bridge is often talked about as part of Saeyeon Bridge's night scenery too. The lit-up bridge itself is pretty, but leaning on the railing to take in the lights of Seogwipo Port along with their reflection on the water is said to make the scene feel even deeper. Slowly walking across the bridge on a cool evening to take in this night view is often mentioned as the best way to enjoy Saeyeon Bridge.

Cross the bridge and you'll find Saeseom, a short but special walk

Saeseom, which you reach after crossing Saeyeon Bridge, is said to be a small uninhabited island true to its name. Hearing the word 'island' might make you picture somewhere large and complicated, but Saeseom is said to be compact enough that walking all the way around doesn't take very long. Inside the island there's said to be a wooden-deck walking trail circling around, with dense trees scattered throughout, so you're said to feel a quiet atmosphere quite different from before crossing the bridge. Having crossed just one bridge from the bustling harbor scenery, it apparently feels like stepping into the stillness of an entirely different island.

Walking along Saeseom's trail, glimpses of Seogwipo's open sea and the harbor are said to appear here and there through the trees. It's not a long trail, but the sea view is said to keep you company the whole way, which is why a lot of people apparently take a short walk here once they've crossed the bridge. Rather than a place packed with flashy attractions, it's talked about more as somewhere good to catch your breath and look out at the sea after crossing over.

Once you know the story of Saeyeon Bridge and Saeseom, it gets hard to just walk past when you're near Seogwipo Port. A plain bridge by day, a bridge of dazzling light by night, and at its end a quiet walking trail on a small uninhabited island — this one short course seems to hold several different faces of Seogwipo's sea. If you happen to have an evening in Seogwipo, giving a slice of that time to Saeyeon Bridge and Saeseom sounds like a good choice.

GYULI's Tip · Saeyeon Bridge's lights are said to turn on only after the sun has fully set. If you want to catch the night view, it's best to arrive a bit later than sunset, and since both the bridge and Saeseom's trail involve walking, comfortable shoes are worth bringing.
