A windy western coast,
where giant windmills turn in a row along the shore

Hi, I'm GYULI, the tangerine sprite who's lived on Jeju's oreum for a hundred years. Not long ago I told you about a stretch of coast over in Aewol, Handam Coastal Trail. Today I want to talk about a stretch of the west coast that has a pretty different feel — a coastal road in the Sinchang-ri area of Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City, called Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road. If Aewol is known as a cute little walking trail running alongside a row of cafés, this stretch is said to be introduced more often as an open coastal drive course you take in by car. Its biggest feature is, unsurprisingly, the large wind turbines lined up along the coast — the white structures people commonly call windmills. Watching those big blades turn slowly in the sea breeze is said to leave a strong impression on people passing through. Today GYULI will walk through what kind of place Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road is said to be, and how it differs from the Aewol coastal walk.

Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road — Whereabouts in Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City

Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road is said to run along the coast in the Sinchang-ri area of Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City. If you pull up a map of Jeju, Hangyeong-myeon sits at the westernmost edge of the island, and it's said to have kept a relatively quiet feel compared to the more crowded east and south coasts. If Aewol's Handam is close to downtown Jeju and packed with cafés that draw plenty of walkers, Sinchang-ri in Hangyeong-myeon is a bit further out, so it's more often introduced as a drive course enjoyed by car or rental car. As the name suggests, the defining feature of this stretch is the windmills. The large wind turbines lined along the coast are said to have become such a defining sight of the area that they made it into the road's own name.

Exactly where Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road begins and ends is described a little differently depending on the source, so I'll be careful not to pin it down to one exact stretch. What does come up consistently, though, is that it refers to a section of the western coast centered on Sinchang-ri, and that driving along it naturally puts a series of wind turbines, big and small, in view. If Handam Coastal Trail in Aewol is a short trail you slowly walk through, this one is said to feel closer to a drive course where the scenery flows past your car window — so even though both are on Jeju's west coast, the way you're meant to enjoy them is said to be quite different.

Watching a huge windmill turn slowly over the blue sea, I felt like time was moving differently.

Why the Windmills Line Up Along This Particular Coast

Jeju has long been called an 'island of wind,' known for how much it blows. Among its coasts, the western shore including Hangyeong-myeon is said to be an especially windy area, and it's said that this geographic trait is why wind turbines came to be set up along this stretch. I want to be careful about stating exactly how many turbines are turning here or how much power they generate — that's not something GYULI can confidently put a number on. What I can say with confidence, though, is that a number of large wind turbines are said to stand lined up along the coast, and that many people describe the scale as quite striking to see in person.

These windmills were probably first built as practical facilities for generating power, but over time they're said to have become a defining scene of the Sinchang-ri area and a photo spot in their own right. Many accounts mention how striking it looks when the sky turns red at sunset and the silhouettes of the windmills keep slowly turning in front of it. During the day, it's often introduced as having an almost exotic feel where the blue sea meets the white windmills, while at sunset it's described as a moodier scene where the glow and the windmills overlap. It's also said to be common to see travelers pull over onto the shoulder for a moment while driving by just to take a photo.

Worth Knowing Before You Go

Since Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road is, as the name suggests, a course you enjoy by driving, it's worth sorting it out ahead of time so you don't confuse it with Handam Coastal Trail, the walking path in Aewol. I occasionally hear stories of people showing up expecting an Aewol-style café street and being caught off guard when there isn't one. It's probably a better mindset to think of this spot as one where the wide-open coastal scenery and the windmills themselves are the main attraction, rather than cafés. One more thing — since this area is known for strong sea winds, it's said to be worth watching out for the wind when you step out of the car to take photos or walk for a bit. The wind is said to pick up even more on rough-weather days, so I'd recommend checking the forecast once more before you head out.

Since it's a stretch along a road, spots to pull over are said to be limited, so if you want to take photos, it's worth looking for a designated spot or a safe patch of shoulder to park. The colors of the sea and sky are said to change quite a bit depending on the season and weather, so keep in mind that a clear day and an overcast day can feel pretty different here. If you've already spent time in Aewol's Handam, going a little further out to the windmill coast in Sinchang-ri, Hangyeong-myeon could be another way to enjoy Jeju's west coast in a different light.

GYULI's Tip · Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road is said to be a drive course rather than a walking trail, so be sure not to confuse it with Handam Coastal Trail in Aewol. Since it's a windy area, park in a safe spot when taking photos, and check the weather before you visit.

That's about as much of the Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road story as I've got for today. Go check out the Hangyeong-myeon coast too, not just Aewol — seeing those windmills turn will give you a whole different feeling.
